Conditioned Response of Salivary-gland Chromosomes of Drosophila Melanogaster to Ecdysones.

چکیده
HE control of metamorphosis and differentiation by hormonal mechanisms (BURDETTE 1964) has been demonstrated in insects in a most illuminating fashion by a large number of investigators. BECKER (1959) related the puffing pattern of the salivary chromosomes of Drosophila to the events of metamorphosis, and CLEVER and KARLSON (1960), and CLEVER ( 1963) were able to change the pattern of puffing in Chironomus by administration of ecdysone. Since so many strains of mutants have been exhaustively studied and genetic methodologies are so refined in Drosophila melanogaster, a study was made of puffing following administration of ecdysones ( BURDETTE and BULLOCK 1963) to this species.

Direct evidence for the presence of DNA in interbands of Drosophila salivary gland chromosomes.
F R O M the results of experiments involving autoradiography of stretched H3 thymidine-labelled salivary gland chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster, and a consideration of previously published evidence, STEFFENSEN (1963) has concluded that DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is absent from the interband regions of these chromosomes. In opposition to this conclusion are the results presented in this r...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Certain Heterochromatic Regions in the Mitotic and Salivary Gland Chromosomes of Drosophila Melanogaster.
MARKED secondary constriction exists in a mitotic chromosome of A Drosophila melanogaster (BRIDGES 1927; HEITZ 1933). It was found by KAUFMANN (1933) to be in the left arm of the second chromosome. It is not associated with a nucleolus-forming region (KAUFMANN 1934). In prophase stages, the parts of the chromosome adjoining the constriction may be widely separated, sometimes by almost the width...
متن کاملThe Drosophila salivary gland chromocenter contains highly polytenized subdomains of mitotic heterochromatin.
Peri-centromeric regions of Drosophila melanogaster chromosomes appear heterochromatic in mitotic cells and become greatly underrepresented in giant polytene chromosomes, where they aggregate into a central mass called the chromocenter. We used P elements inserted at sites dispersed throughout much of the mitotic heterochromatin to analyze the fate of 31 individual sites during polytenization. ...
متن کاملSpatial Organization of Chromosomes in the Salivary Gland Nuclei of Drosophila melanogaster
Using a computer-based system for model building and analysis, three-dimensional models of 24 Drosophila melanogaster salivary gland nuclei have been constructed from optically or physically sectioned glands, allowing several generalizations about chromosome folding and packaging in these nuclei. First and most surprising, the prominent coiling of the chromosomes is strongly chiral, with fight-...
متن کاملLocalization of RNA polymerase in polytene chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster.
RNA polymerase (RNA nucleotidyltransferase) B (or II) and histone H1 of Drosophila melanogster were localized on salivary gland polytene chromosomes using the indirect immunofluorescence technique. RNA polymerase B is present almost exclusively in puffs and interband regions, whereas histone H1 is found primarily in bands. The puff at region 3C, known to be transcriptionally active in larval sa...
